A Pilgrim Garden: Reflections from The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham

Every evening since 6 July 1922 the Rosary has been recited by pilgrims to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. On that day the people of Walsingham, led by Fr Alfred Hope Patten, the parish priest, carried into their parish church a replica of an ancient carved image of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding her Divine Son.

A Pilgrim Garden celebrates this unbroken chain of prayer through a series of meditations, written by members of the Shrine’s College of Guardians, on the twenty Mysteries of the Rosary. The meditations are accompanied by photographs of the beautiful Shrine Gardens, which will take readers on a journey around the gardens as they reflect and pray.

As the Rt Revd Philip North, Master of the College of Guardians, writes in his introduction, ‘In the Bible, the garden is repeatedly a place of encounter with the divine. Think of Adam and Eve living the life intended for humanity in Eden. Or think of Mary Magdalene discovering the Risen Christ in another garden as Adam’s sin was transformed into glory through the saving work of Jesus. Likewise, in Walsingham, it is not enough for the gardens merely to be beautiful, or peaceful, or tastefully planted. They must bespeak the presence of the Risen Lord. They must be a place of godly encounter . . .’
