Card – York Minster Cross
A cross shaped panel from York Minster, likely German, c. 1490-1520.
The Virgin and Child are standing on a crescent moon which pierces the disc of the sun and they are surmounted by an angel holding a crown over the head of the Virgin. This embroidery is worked on natural coloured, coarse, plain woven linen in laid and couched floss silks with some details worked in thick brown wool. The faces and hands are applied silk-satin with embroidered and painted detail.
